Robert Optical’s roots trace back to 1951, when Robert Schaefer Sr. opened his eyewear business on West Ferry and Main Street. Five years later, Robert Sr.’s father, Arthur Schaefer, joined the business and worked alongside his son for the next 30 years. In 1964, Robert Optical moved to its current location on Harlem Rd. in Snyder, and 5 years later, Robert Sr. expanded the family tradition by hiring his teenage son, Robert Schaefer Jr. Robert Jr. worked part-time with the edging and processing of lenses, and after graduating college in 1975; he became a full -time employee of Robert Optical. This three-generation trio worked together for many years until Arthur retired in 1985. Soon after, Robert Sr. also retried, and Robert Jr. purchased the business from his father in 1990. That same year, Babcock Optical lost their lease at a location a few blocks from Robert Optical, and so this company, led by Ted Babcock, joined forces with Robert Optical until Ted’s retirement in 2002. After Ted’s retirement, Jim VanDuzer joined the scene.
